The establishment of a new vision for the centre of Tongeren has enabled a reconfiguration of the relationship with users and the place of nature. Some of the roads were closed to traffic. An extensive active mobility network makes the city accessible to its inhabitants, reconnecting the valley up and downstream. The park and the river are thus fulfilling their role as a structuring ecological link between the districts and along the river. Fish ladders allow fish to migrate upstream.
The project was carried out within Sweco. It has mobilised many disciplines (landscape, infrastructure, hydrology, mobility, etc.) in conjunction with an intensive participation process with local actors and the population. This project illustrates the interdisciplinary approach which we advocate, where design and users are at the heart of the process.
The project has won the Public Spaces Award for 2021.
