Stepping outside while still feeling a little at home. This is one of the ideas shaping Julien Deloffre and L’atelier DEV architecture’s approach to public space. One image captures this approach particularly well: a sofa that you could simply take out into the street.
During Pitch It 2026, Julien Deloffre explores three questions that run through the practice’s projects: how can we prioritise flows, ‘domesticate’ public space and bring more greenery into it?
Through several projects in Brussels, he shows how these principles can be put into practice. In the Bon Air garden city in Anderlecht, for example, the team worked with residents to create new public squares and define, together with the people living nearby, the uses and facilities they needed.
The presentation also explores the role of vegetation and permeable surfaces in public space, particularly to encourage water infiltration, create cool areas and support biodiversity.
A reflection on how to design public spaces that are not simply places we pass through, but also places we can make our own.
