The network of Brussels’ sustainable construction and renovation actors

Action!

Within the framework of the project 'Living Labs Brussels Retrofit', WVDM wants to give a concrete answer to the renovation of the student housing in the heart of the university campus of Ixelles, designed by architect Willy Van Der Meeren between 1971 and 1973, by developing innovative renovation strategies that take into account: energy, heritage, sustainability and economy.

Will the crisis change our relationship with nature? New discoveries about nature's biomes could redefine who we are as humans and better understand the health of our cities. Can the urban and architectural microbiome be exploited and put to good use? Can materials such as wood have a positive effect even in hygiene-sensitive areas? To find answers to these questions, ecobuild.brussels and Art&Build brought together around the table:

  • Steven Ware, architect, Art&Build partner
  • Florence Aviat, CEO YouR ResearcH Bio Scientific
  • Pascal Jean Lopez, Director of Research at the CNRS

Will the crisis change our relationship to the economy? There are several encouraging trends that give hope for the development of a circular global economy. What are the obstacles facing buildings and cities? Can we make mobility solutions, wastewater, rainwater and energy management circular? To find answers to these questions, ecobuild.brussels and Art&Build brought together around the table:

  • Steven Ware, architect, Art&Build partner
  • Michael Braungart, Professor Dr. Michael Braungart CEO EPEA GmbH
  • Sunita Van Heers, CEO Sureal

#shapingfuturebrussels Will the crisis change our relationship to spatial planning? What are the major urban challenges for cities like #Brussels or #Paris? Is there still a place for major real estate projects?

To find answers to these questions, @ecobuild.brussels and @Art&Build have brought together around the table:

  • @Pascal Smet, Brussels Secretary of State for Spatial Planning
  • @David Roulin, CEO of Art&Build
  • @Marion Waller, Advisor to the Mayor of Paris

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) strives for sustainable management of its patrimony [VUB 2011]. A renovation of the student residences in the heart of the university campus in Ixelles, designed by architect Willy Van Der Meeren between 1971 and 1973, poses a special challenge in this respect.

The Modul'Air project proposes, as part of the 'Living Labs Brussels Retrofit' project call, to combine the use of prefabricated facades for renovation with integrated ventilation systems and other technical equipment.

As part of the 'Living Labs Brussels Retrofit' call for projects, the Reno-Lab-C project aims to implement an approach to collective renovations with private owners/landlords who are currently unable to renovate for reasons such as affordability.

Prio-Climat's main objective, in the context of the 'Living Labs Brussels Retrofit' project call, is to optimise the social housing renovation strategy of the Foyer Anderlechtois in order to achieve a higher quality indoor climate, aimed at satisfying residents and controlling energy performance.
