The requirements: to have a garden within four months but with large trees and shrubs, with several objectives, namely 1) matching the Japanese art collections 2) concealing imposing party walls 3) significantly improving the biodiversity of the site by promoting native species.
To set up this exceptional landscape proposal by the landscape agency SLAP Paysage, the agronomic expertise offered by Aliwen guaranteed the success of this planting by applying the adage ‘the right tree in the right place’.
Aliwen supported the different stages of the project, namely through:
- selection of trees and shrubs in the nursery to ensure good quality plants (free of wounds and diseases)
- receipt of the plants and checking during unloading to ensure that no wounds are present on them
- design of the planting pits: the planting soil is brought into the pits following the analysis of the soil and the requirements of the plants in terms of pH in particular. Aliwen has also designed the drainage system to ensure that excess water is evacuated due to the presence of clay around the area dug for the pit. Root ball staking takes place to ensure the immobility of the root ball and to allow root expansion. Covering the soil with a good quality RCW limits soil evaporation and the appearance of weeds, but most importantly it provides a natural supply of mineral nutrients for the young tree
- checking the efficiency of the irrigation system according to the water requirements of the plants
SLAP Paysage’s landscape proposal was to choose trees, in particular birches (Betula utilis) for the graphic design and the whiteness of the trunks, as well as a collection of Japanese maple (Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’) to match the Japanese criterion for the site and the garden. The flowers of the Japanese kimono fabrics guided the choice towards dogwoods (Cornus kousa ‘venus’), with the entire site embellished with ferns, hellebores, etc.
Agronomic expertise supporting landscape expertise guarantees the successful recovery of plants in an exceptional garden without any particular extra cost, simply thanks to the correct choice of plants placed in an optimal growth environment.
