From its base in the Brussels district of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Karibu Architecture strives to create architecture that has a positive impact on nature and on people themselves. “For us, architecture is not an end product, but simply the catalyst that gives rise to a positive process.” The construction process therefore does not come to an end once the building is completed. Managing Director, Kjell Keymolen, believes that architecture can mean a great deal to the end user and be of positive benefit to them. Karibu Architecture therefore adopts inclusiveness as its guiding principle and designs with everyone in mind. For the language lovers amongst you, the word ‘karibu’ means ‘welcome’ in Swahili. “Inclusiveness is therefore embedded within the DNA of our agency”.

The user is given an active role
As business manager, Kjell took a postgraduate course in vernacular construction. Not only did he learn how to build using local materials such as clay and earth, but the course also clarified the importance and (added) value of user participation. In projects designed by Karibu Architecture, the user of the building is also included. By preparing a feasibility study, we clearly identify the needs and requirements of the end user. Where possible, the users themselves roll up their sleeves and get involved, in order to gain an enhanced feeling of belonging to the project. In order to provide the client with full information about the environmental impact of the materials, we use TOTEM, an online tool to assess the environmental impact of urban buildings. This ensures that conscious choices are made.

Out-of-the-box designs
The use of materials is an important keystone within the projects that Karibu Architecture undertakes. We actively promote the use of local, natural materials and make use of demountable and flexible building solutions. Experimentation and innovation do not deter us. Karibu Architecture thinks in an out-of-the-box and circular way. Together with the client and the contractor, we seek solutions that are in keeping with the uniqueness of the project. In the past, Karibu architecture experimented with off-grid systems, the reuse of earth and participatory processes. By incorporating feedback loops, each project also takes the form of an active learning process that enables the projects themselves to be continually improved.
