Looking Back at MIPIM 2025: Brussels and Sustainable Construction at the Heart of the Discussions

MIPIM 2025 was once again an opportunity to highlight the challenges of sustainable and circular construction. ecobuild.brussels played an active role by organizing and participating in several conferences and strategic exchanges. What are the key takeaways from this week rich in discussions and networking?

CSRD Beyond Compliance: Transparency and Impact at the Core of Concerns

During our CSRD Beyond Compliance conference, we had the pleasure of welcoming Sunita Van Heers (Surreal) as keynote speaker, along with Julie Willem (Atenor), Benjamin Cadranel (Citydev), and Simon Claeys (B2Ai) for an inspiring panel discussion.
Despite adjustments to the OMNIBUS directive, nearly 80% of companies remain willing to invest in ESG. The need for transparency and the adoption of a common language were highlighted as major levers for developing a long-term vision and maximizing the impact of implemented actions.
The key takeaway? Keeping things simple and attractive to engage as many stakeholders as possible in this necessary transition.
Finally, as Isabelle Grippa (hub.brussels) pointed out in her introduction, collaboration between companies, regardless of their size, is essential to generating both economic and societal value.

Brussels Regional Conference: Joining Forces to Accelerate Projects

During the Brussels Regional Conference, Rudi Vervoort and David Leisterh emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private actors to tackle the challenges facing Brussels. This message was echoed by the panel members: Stéphan Sonneville (UPSI), Isabelle Grippa (hub.brussels), Dorien Robben (SLRB), Alexandre de Cesco (Embuild), Gilles Delforge (SAU), and Benjamin Cadranel (Citydev).
A key point raised by all: The objectives of different stakeholders are aligned—so why not work together instead of slowing down project execution?
By joining forces, we could accelerate certain strategic projects within just a few years, boosting the region’s attractiveness and improving citizens’ quality of life. The need for greater support for entrepreneurs was also emphasized, as they are true drivers of innovation and inclusivity in sustainable construction.

NEEXT by Drees & Sommer: Showcasing Brussels’ Expertise

As part of the NEEXT by Drees & Sommer initiative, around thirty international entrepreneurs explored Brussels’ successes in sustainable construction.
One of the key highlights? The recognition of passive building as a major breakthrough that continues to inspire beyond our borders. However, to go further, reducing embodied carbon and renovating existing buildings have become top priorities.
A Brussels measure that particularly caught attention: demolition-reconstruction is no longer the default solution. This paradigm shift encourages us to rethink our practices and adopt more circular and sustainable approaches.

An Uncertain Future, but Increasingly Circular

Despite complex economic and political conditions, one thing is certain: sustainability and circularity remain the pillars of most projects presented at MIPIM 2025. Industry stakeholders are stepping up efforts to propose ambitious, creative, and committed solutions.
Even the unpredictable weather in Cannes seemed to remind us of the urgency to act in the face of climate challenges!
A huge thank you to Barbara Wolff (B2Ai) for moderating the discussions and to Mister Emma (Archiurbain) for showcasing inspiring projects at our stand.

We leave MIPIM more convinced than ever: Together, we can accelerate the transition to sustainable and resilient construction!
