How can renovation, reuse, changes of use and building extensions help increase the housing supply?
On 4 November, the Government of Catalonia is hosting the free conference “The City as a Quarry: Housing Transformation” in Brussels. Curated by Marta Peris and José Toral of Peris+Toral Arquitectes, the event connects European housing policy and financing with architectural experiences focused on transforming existing buildings.
The conference will explore different ways of working with the existing building stock, from converting offices and commercial premises to renovating and extending residential buildings and reusing existing structures and materials.
The discussions will address the relationship between housing needs, public policy, financing and architectural practice in response to both the housing crisis and the climate emergency.
The event is part of the series “Conferences on Contemporary Catalan Architecture. Social housing”, within World Capital of Architecture Barcelona 2026.
