The Summer School “Building with Earth & Fibres” is a two‑week immersive workshop fully dedicated to exploring geo‑based and bio‑based construction materials. Through lectures, project visits and hands‑on workshops, participants discover the potential of natural fibres and raw earth in contemporary architecture.
This modular programme allows participants to enrol for one or two weeks and offers a unique learning experience based on practice and experimentation.
Unfired earth and natural fibres are still rarely used in contemporary construction and are seldom included in architectural education. Yet these materials are part of vernacular architecture and possess important ecological qualities: they are local, low‑energy and recyclable.
This summer school offers full immersion in these materials and their contemporary applications. Participants will discover various building techniques through lectures, project visits and hands‑on workshops.
The programme is organised by BC studies, the Faculty of Architecture La Cambre Horta (ULB) and Amàco, in collaboration with Brussels Environment.
Participants can choose to follow the full two‑week experience or register for one thematic week.
Week 1: Focus on fibres
29 June – 3 July 2026
This week is dedicated to bio‑based materials and natural fibres. It combines lectures, project visits and hands‑on workshops centred on fibre‑based construction techniques.
Week 2: Focus on earth
6 July – 10 July 2026
The second week focuses on building techniques using unfired earth, with lectures, practical workshops and a guided tour of architectural projects in Brussels (“Earth Bike Tour”).
