Commissioning of the largest heat network in Brussels

Revolutionary Heat Network for Brussels

Recently, Brussels has introduced an extraordinary urban heat network: the Usquare project. This network, now fully operational, stands out for its innovation and sustainability. It has an exceptional capacity to meet the heating and cooling needs of an entire neighborhood, including approximately 580 residences and university buildings of VUB and ULB. It is the most extensive heat network in the Belgian capital.

Beyond its size, this project is characterized by its use of a closed-loop system powered by geothermal energy, combined with a state-of-the-art heat pump. These cutting-edge technologies enhance its eco-friendly and innovative nature.

The installation, discreetly integrated into the urban space, is a model of harmony between functionality and aesthetics. The Cour d’Honneur, adorned with twenty trees, now hides the kilometers of pipes and numerous probes essential to the network’s operation.

While Usquare sets a precedent, Corentin Voglaire, administrator at MK Engineering, emphasizes the challenges in developing similar projects. He highlights the difficulty in finding suitable public spaces in Brussels but mentions promising alternatives along the canal and in areas such as Molenbeek.
